Finding field trips for young children is easier than you think! You don’t need to travel far or spend a lot of money to give your preschooler a variety of hands-on learning experiences through field trips. Some of the best field trips are just around the corner from home! So, let’s dive into 10 simple and fun places to visit with your little ones!
Every time we start a new learning theme in our Preschool Curriculum, I LOVE to take a trip to our local library to find a few books to go with the theme we are learning. Reading books is so important to work into your schedule because our children learn so much when reading a book. Check out a storytime session, explore the children’s section, and let your child pick out a few books to take home. This is a great way to build excitement around reading!
The grocery store is a great place to turn a regular shopping trip into a learning adventure! You can talk about different types of foods, count fruits and vegetables, and even let your child help pick out ingredients for a meal. You can also practice sorting by colors or shapes while walking through the aisles. If you can find a grocery store with children’s shopping carts, this makes shopping extra fun!
Do your kids love drawing, writing, or creating notes for you? If they do, then a post office is a great field trip! Visiting the post office is a great way to show them how mail works. You can bring along a letter or art project placed in an envelope for a grandparent or friend. Make sure to visit the mail counter so your children can experience purchasing a stamp.
Do your children get excited when they see a fire engine drive by? Many fire stations offer free tours for young children! Children can meet firefighters, see a fire truck up close, and learn about fire safety in a way that’s both fun and memorable. Call ahead to see if your local station offers tours!
A bakery visit can be a treat! If you can find a bakery with a window, sometimes you can watch how bread and pastries are made, talk about ingredients, and maybe even try a special treat together. This is a great way to introduce new foods and spark curiosity about baking. If you want to teach your children all about Baking, check out our Baking Preschool Unit.
Field trips do not need to be fancy, to be fun and educational! A simple trip to the park can be full of learning opportunities. Collect leaves, look for different birds, and talk about the changing seasons. You can even bring along a magnifying glass to explore bugs and flowers up close!
Farmer’s markets are open all year long! Taking a trip to the market is a fun way to teach children where food comes from. You can meet local farmers, talk about different fruits and vegetables, and maybe even let your preschooler pick out a new food to try. This helps build healthy eating habits in a fun way! After your visit, come back home and continue learning with our Farmer’s Market Preschool Unit!
Animals are always a hit with preschoolers! We love to visit to our local pet store where we can see a variety of animals up close. Since our pet story has a doggie daycare and grooming salon, we can usually see a few dogs, fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, and other fun reptiles while we are there. You can talk about pet care, animal sounds, and even practice counting fish in the tanks! Then, head home for some activities from our Pets Preschool Unit!
Little ones love exploring nature! If you want to teach your children about plants or gardenting, then a visit to a garden center is a great way to see a variety of plans up close! You can talk with your little ones about plants of all shapes and sizes, smell flowers, and learn how things grow. You could even pick out a small plant to take home and care for together.
Many police stations welcome young visitors! This is a great way for children to meet a friendly police officer, see a patrol car, and learn about community helpers. It’s also a great opportunity to talk about safety in a positive way.
So there you have it! 10 simple and fun neighborhood field trips you can go on with preschooler without a lot of prep or planning! Each of these trips offer a chance to explore something new, ask questions, and make learning feel like an exciting adventure as you are packing up the car to leave home. If you want to grab all the plans and printables you need to teach your children at home, then check out my Preschool Curriculum for the Year!
